| Bansuri, or bamboo flute, is a traditional instrument that has been adapted in this century, mostly by Pannalal Ghosh, to accomodate the nuances of classical music. Our flutes are made by Jeff Whittier, a master craftsman who has been a student of flute master G.S. Sachdev since 1971. His flutes are played by Sachdev and Hariprasad Chaurasia, and are praised by musicians everywhere for their sweet tone and tunefulness. Bansuri can have either six or seven finger holes. The traditional instrument has six holes. The seventh hole was added to give more versatility in playing certain ornaments. These flutes are made to be in tune in one key, which is the note produced when the top three holes are closed. |
